After Pauling falls asleep in her wedding dress on the bus home, her grandmother finds her and takes her to their ranch in Sonoma, California. Victoria’s father has recently died, and the family is struggling to keep the ranch running. Pauling subsequently discovers that she is pregnant.
Victoria’s grandmother tells her that she must choose between staying at the ranch and returning home to get married, or staying at the ranch and giving birth to her child out of wedlock, which would shame the family. After much deliberation, Pauling decides to stay at the ranch and have her baby.
A few months later, Victoria gives birth to a baby girl whom she names Isabel. Shortly thereafter, Rainer returns to the United States and visits Victoria at the ranch. He tells her that he is going back to Germany to work on his career, but he wants her to come with him. Victoria tells him that she cannot leave Isabel, and Rainer leaves without Victoria.
Victoria’s grandmother dies shortly thereafter, and Rainer returns to the United States once again. This time he asks Victoria to marry him, and she agrees. The two get married in a small ceremony at the ranch before Rainer returns to Germany with his new wife and daughter.
