In the year 20xx, the world is at war. Two powerful nations, the Alliance and the Federation, are locked in a conflict that has spanned generations. Both sides have suffered heavy casualties, but neither is willing to back down.

The Movie

The Movie, directed by Wolfgang Petersen and released in 1985, is a perfect example of the Cold War genre. The story follows a German intelligence officer, Claus Schenk Graf von Stauffenberg (played by Götz George), who is tasked with carrying out Operation Valkyrie – a plot to assassinate Adolf Hitler and overthrow the Nazi regime. The movie is tense, exciting and ultimately tragic, as the plot is foiled and von Stauffenberg is executed.

The Plot

The film starts with an interrogation of a soldier by a American intelligence officer. The soldier talks about his part in a plot to kill the President of the United States. The plan was to use a missile to shoot down Air Force One, but the soldier says he was double crossed and the missile never reached its target.

The interview is intercut with flashbacks of the events leading up to the assassination attempt. We see the soldier being recruited by a group of terrorists, and being given a false identity. He is trained in how to use the missile, and told that he will be a hero for his part in killing the President.

On the day of the attack, the soldier’s nerves get the better of him and he backs out at the last minute. He watchesthe missile launch and then sees it explode in mid-air, killing everyone on board Air Force One. The soldier is captured and interrogated, and we see him break down and confess to his part in the plot.

The Setting

The movie is set in Germany, in the year 1933. The Nazis have just come to power, and the country is in a state of turmoil. Hans Frank, a young lawyer, is recruited by the Nazis to help them in their quest to consolidate power and crush all opposition. He is sent to Dachau, the first concentration camp, where he meets Ernst Röhm, the head of the SA (Stormtroopers). Röhm is impressed with Frank’s abilities and assigns him to oversee the construction of a new camp at Oranienburg.

Frank quickly rises through the ranks of the Nazi hierarchy and becomes a ruthless leader. He takes sadistic pleasure in torturing and killing those who cross him. He also becomes involved in the “Final Solution”, the Nazi plan to exterminate all Jews from Europe.

The movie follows Frank as he carries out his duties with ruthless efficiency. It also depicts the growing resistance to Nazi rule, both inside and outside the concentration camps. As the movie progresses, Frank begins to realize that even his own family is not safe from his enemies.
